Explore the history of Inangahua County!
Approximately 2 kilometers east from the heart of Reefton in the historic settlement of Blacks Point, the Blacks Point Museum showcases the rich heritage of this iconic West Coast area. The museum’s building, a pit-sawn timber structure, which itself dates back to 1876 and once served as the Wesleyan Methodist Church— is a piece of history lovingly preserved since pioneering times.
As you pass through the entrance doors, you are immersed in an array of interests and oddities. Wander through the museum space to discover a treasure trove of historical artifacts, including school records, cemetery records, town directories, and an extensive collection of historical photographs. The Blacks Point Museum also boasts heirlooms, books, and displays of mining memorabilia, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the area’s history at both a personal and an industrial level.
For those delving deep into local genealogy or exploring the annals of the Inangahua district, a visit to the museum is a must. Guiding the journey you will usually find the museum’s main curator, John Taylor, who is always eager to share insights into the area’s unique history with visitors. John will also happily show visitors up around the historic stamping battery to the north of the museum site. Here, you can see the water power start-up that begins the crushing mechanical blows once used to extract gold from hard quartz.
