Showcasing Hokitika’s Rich History

Since its establishment, Heritage Hokitika has been on a mission to restore and safeguard the historical identity of Hokitika, transforming the town into a space that resonates with locals and captivates visitors.

The journey began in 1988 with the formation of Heritage Hokitika Inc. In 1989, the Gibson Quay Interpretation area took center stage. The relocation and restoration of the Customhouse Building in 1990 added another layer to Hokitika’s architectural narrative. As the ’90s progressed, the heritage mindset extended to Sunset Point, a panoramic vista further transformed following the erection of a viewing tower overlooking the town’s maritime heritage.

The restorations continued with plans for the Carnegie Building in 1994, a structure that would later symbolise Hokitika’s resilience. The late ’90s witnessed the completion of the Carnegie Building restoration and the birth of the Westland Industrial Heritage Park in 2000, an ode to the region’s industrial roots. Ongoing restoration projects continued with the gift of the ‘Countess’ lifeboat to the community in 2000 and ongoing placement of plaques and interpretation panels continue to etch Hokitika’s history prominently.

Stalwart committee members envisage a future where historic enthusiasm knows no bounds. The prospect of an enlarged membership, especially with younger individuals from the community, holds the promise of new chapters waiting to be written in Hokitika’s history.
