Northern Buller Museum
An iconic West Coast museum on historic coal mining land. Features Category 2 listed coke ovens onsite, a collection of four buildings that includes a heritage Nissan Hut, and the impressive Millerton Incline on the doorstep to explore.
Northern Buller heritage, inside and out!
In the heart of Granity, just off the main road, is a historical site that stands out for its nationally significant heritage- including the listed Category 2 coke ovens dating back to the early 1900s and the 1947 Marion Electric Shovel that once worked the Stockton Plateau. The site, under the care of the Northern Buller Museum Trust, is spread across four main buildings. The legendary Millerton Incline is also encompassed under the Trust’s protection, where a walking track is being reinstated, adding to the site’s historical charm.
The main building, a distinctive domed-roof Nissan hut, is a treasure trove of history. This adjoins the workshop and repair building the museum volunteers utilise to bring some of the more forlorn history back to life. The Nissan Hut houses an array of displays, including photographs that capture the region’s historic essence from Granity to Seddonville. The themed exhibits, like the mining displays, the sewing room, recreated classroom, and the vintage kitchen, offer a unique glimpse into the area’s industrial and social past. Around the room you are surrounded by displays of intriguing artifacts, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts. Be sure to stop and tempt your fate on the One Armed Bandit, too!
Their second significant museum building greets you with an impressive collection of mining equipment and unique rail carts, accompanied by a wall of ornate dials and gauges from the former Ngakawau Power Station. Witness the region’s important industrial legacy standing beside the Category 2 listed coke ovens, a coal exhibit providing explosive interest, and a lovingly restored post office royal mail cart.
A third building, one currently undergoing restoration, is the former Inangahua Railway Station, another nationally interesting structure. Redevelopments and renovations promise to expand the museum’s offerings into this building with additional displays around Northern Buller’s rail heritage.
As the museum reorganises its space, anticipate the exciting project to reopen the Millerton Incline/Tramway as a walking track, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in history amidst the scenic surroundings.
