Exploring Ross with WRENIS
Ross isn’t your average tourist destination. It’s a place where history buffs and nature lovers can be immersed in incredible stories, thanks in part to the tireless efforts of the Westland Environment Network Incorporated Society (WRENIS).
WRENIS is a passionate group of volunteers who have dedicated over a decade to preserving and highlighting Ross’s rich heritage. Since 2011, they’ve been working with the Ross Goldfields Information and Heritage Centre, bringing together the township’s unique stories for locals and visitors alike.
Thanks to WRENIS, you can now lace up your boots and embark on a 7.1-kilometre journey through time. Their completed Heritage Tramping Track takes you on a loop, traversing the historical gold mining areas that once bustled with activity in the hills surrounding Ross. As you walk, you’ll gain a deeper understanding for the town’s roots and the intrepid spirit of its people.
WRENIS’s contributions extend beyond marked trails. They’ve tirelessly worked towards developing the Chinese Gold Miners Memorial Gardens, a tribute to an often underrepresented West Coast community that played a significant role in Ross’s development.
Moving along Grimmond Memorial Avenue, you’ll encounter a series of 20 Memorial Oak Trees, each standing tall in memory of Ross’s combat war heroes. Planted with love and dedication, these trees serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made in service of our country. WRENIS played a crucial role in establishing this memorial, ensuring that the bravery of Ross’s sons is never forgotten. They have also installed a specific tribute to Private Robert Hunt Currie, a local who bravely served his nation. Take a pause at the memorial seat and plaque dedicated to him along the avenue – a small token of immense gratitude.
To add a further touch of national pride, WRENIS proudly hosted Sir Jerry Matapare for a special oak planting ceremony, and the Royal New Zealand Navy in turn presented a commemorative bronze plaque honoring Ross’s very own Victoria Cross recipient, Samuel Mitchell.
WRENIS isn’t just focused on preserving the past; they’re also actively shaping the future. Their vision for a vibrant community greenspace is coming to life. A safe area for horseback riding, cycling, leisurely walks, and moments of quiet reflection. This project is rapidly becoming a reality. Supported by Matariki funding and the helping hands of the Jobs for Nature program, WRENIS is transforming a bare patch of land into a thriving hub for the Ross community.
With the above projects already bearing fruit and more plans on the horizon, WRENIS is leading the way in keeping the story and future of Ross thriving.
