Learn the captivating story of the Kawatiri/Buller District at the Museum of Kawatiri, a newly refurbished destination on the Pounamu Pathway. Formerly known as the Coaltown Museum, this revitalised space transcends its roots, offering a multi-layered experience to enthral visitors of all ages.
Step into an audio-visual journey exploring the intertwined narratives of pounamu (greenstone), coal, and gold, the three treasures that shaped the region’s identity. Immerse yourself in tangible cultural heritage through a display of remarkable Māori artifacts unearthed at one of New Zealand’s earliest known human settlements to the south of the Kawatiri (Buller) River.
Descend deeper into the region’s well-known industrial heart through the dedicated coal and industrial exhibit. Stand in awe of a real mine cart perched at a neck-turning angle, replicating the legendary Denniston Incline. Head into a recreated underground tunnel for a truly immersive experience where you can settle down in the mini-movie theater and listen to poignant local recollections of times not long past.
