Millerton and Plateau Protection Society
Millerton settlement, now boasting a population of around 30-40 residents, carries a history deeply intertwined with coal mining, similar to its neighbour Denniston. MAPPS now acts as a conservator for the area.
A Community Forged in Coal
Millerton’s story mirrors that of Denniston, both towns thriving and waning with the fortunes of coal mining in the region. Established in the late 19th century, Millerton’s peak saw a vibrant community fueled by the busy Millerton Mine. However, by the late 1960s, mining operations had ceased, leaving a legacy reflected in the town’s unique character.
While classified as a “ghost town” in the 1970s due to the decline in mining, Millerton has maintained a resident population, defying the label. This resilience is further accentuated by the Millerton Incline, a significant engineering feat for its time.
Built in 1891, the incline was a crucial link, transporting coal tubs from the mines to the coastal railway. Remnants of this narrow-gauge incline, including tracks and carts, stand as reminders of this innovative engineering marvel.
The Millerton and Plateau Protection Society (MAPPS) was formed in 2000, recognising the importance of preserving the community and the region’s heritage. This incorporated society plays a vital role in advocating for the community and collaborating with mining entities to establish a buffer zone known as the Heritage and Ecological Reserve. This reserve is a sanctuary for native flora and fauna, allowing sustainable mining operations to coexist.
Despite its mining past, Millerton offers more than just historical remnants. Visitors can discover a vibrant community spirit, evident in its rich history, including the Millerton All Blacks football club, which has been runners-up in the national championship twice.
Millerton beckons nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. The town offers various short walks, leading to historical sites, scenic viewpoints, and even a bathhouse, where miners once relaxed after a long day’s work. Tourists can also venture down the closed section of the old road, encountering cascading waterfalls and breathtaking coastal views.
