Mawhera Pa – Pounamu Pathway
Poutini Ngāi Tahu are showcased at Māwhera Pā. An innovative modern experience whisking you back in time, revealing the history of the Iwi who became key players in the West Coast/ Te Tai o Poutini story.
A Unique West Coast Origin Story
Born from a collaborative partnership between Poutini Ngāi Tahu and the renowned Wētā Workshop, this first development of the Pounamu Pathway journey offers more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a platform for sharing and connecting Poutini Ngāi Tahu stories with the world in an engaging and authentic way.
Surround yourself in Poutini Ngāi Tahu heritage as you learn about their early establishment across the West Coast, vicious battles won and lost, and the signing of the Arahura Deed. Inside the Māwhera Pā complex, a series of distinct whare (houses) each unveils a different chapter of the region’s story. A key highlight is witnessing the imposing presence of Tūhuru, the legendary warrior chief, and feeling the mana he exudes, physically and spiritually, in hyper-realistic Wētā Workshop detail.
The Pounamu Pathway journey offers a downloadable free app (available from their website) that you can utilise while travelling around the West Coast/ Te Tai o Poutini to further expand upon your learning and understanding.
