Friends of Waiuta
The historic town of Waiuta, once a bustling gold mining settlement, now offers a glimpse into a bygone era. All carefully tended by the Friends of Waiuta, a passionate group dedicated to preserving the town’s heritage.
Established in 1985, Friends of Waiuta have helped transform the township into an iconic visitor destination and contributed to informative signs around the town, helping make sense of the area’s full story.
Sites such as Gills Cottage and the Jos Divis Hut, some of the few remaining historical buildings, have been saved from decay thanks to the society’s efforts. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the “underground quartz mine experience” just up the road at the Reefton Visitor Centre, is another testament to their expansive vision.
The Friends are passionate about sharing Waiuta’s story. They’ve published books, created souvenirs, and even released documentaries about the life and times of the town.
Looking ahead, the Friends of Waiuta envision Waiuta as a hub for both recreation and education. The publicly bookable Waiuta Lodge is already one significant step in this vision for anyone wishing to spend more time in the area. The group plan to restore the remaining buildings further, publish more books, and collaborate with the Department of Conservation on ongoing projects.
