Brunner Mine Disaster Grave

On March 26, 1896, a fatal explosion at the Brunner coal mine left a permanent scar on New Zealand’s industrial history. Many of the recovered bodies were laid to rest in a mass grave at the nearby Stillwater Cemetery.

The disaster began when a “blown-out shot” ignited a pocket of methane gas. This initial blast stirred up fine coal dust, which acted as fuel for a massive secondary explosion that tore through the underground tunnels. The force was so immense that it killed every single one of the 65 men and boys on the morning shift either instantly or through the subsequent release of “afterdamp,” a suffocating mixture of toxic gases.

The aftermath was a scene of collective national mourning. In the small West Coast community, the loss was absolute; 186 children were left fatherless and 37 women widowed. Rescue teams worked tirelessly in dangerous conditions to recover the bodies. 50 bodies were interred in the Stillwater Cemetery overall from the disaster. The large and very prominent mass grave contains 33 victims.
