Warm welcomes in the “special settlement”.
Karamea is near the end of the road for the northern West Coast, and its sub-tropical solitude has been a foundation stone in sculpting the people who now call it home. The Karamea Centennial Museum provides a curious insight into the lives and times of all generations to have set up habitation in the area, many arriving under the guise of Premier Julius Vogel’s “special settlement” scheme of the 1870s.
Covering topics such as farming, sawmilling, gold mining, and flax milling. The museum has a definite skew towards industries of the landscape. However, you will also discover brilliant examples of Moa and Haast Eagle bones and a room filled with exceptional Māori artefacts, harking back to a time before European settlers made their mark.
A brand-new records and research room has recently been developed for anyone wishing to dig into photographs, maps, genealogy and other archives. The addition of this room has been a long time in the making and a testament to the museums views of preserving their local past into the future.
